So, the skin has many different layers, and each layer is fat. Fats are carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Fats are, in fact, organic chemical compounds. When we cut out a sample of fat from the skin, many different ways can break it down into its chemical components. We need to find the fatty acid required to provide the benefits we want. We found that it was not an easily measurable chemical in the skin; it was a very complex mixture. So, to measure what we wanted to measure, we had to isolate that particular fatty acid and then measure it. The laboratory techniques we used involved a step called solid-phase extraction.
